Street Food of Olympia

Kayla Ducey

It is not vital to travel to new places to experience different things as described by Marcel Proust. New and exciting things are waiting just around the corner. That corner being the city blocks of Olympia. Olympia is a diverse place, there are lots of different cultures here and with culture comes with the added bonus of cuisine. Below a list of  a few local food trucks and food stalls:

Gringo Maniac – 2421 93rd Ave SW, Tumwater, WA 98512

Locally owned and operated, Gringo Maniac brings several different flavors together to create unheard of combinations. Gringo Maniac offers nothing “authentic, but the taste.” The food here follows no rules and many people will find something they like here.

The menu is a diverse usage of ingredients to achieve different flavors. The “Madam Wu” taco has an Asian-styled taste and appearance. Everything here is is “delicious” claimed several critics and reviewers from online. So, if you are getting off at exit 99 come stop on by!

Honeycuspe – 2504 Pacific Ave SE, Olympia, WA 98501

There is a create-your-own option; you could get something like this!

Offering delicious waffles with modern twists. Honeycuspe has a wide variety of waffles from sweet to savory . There is outdoor seating, and rumors of soon to be had gluten-free waffles. This sweet treat is tucked away on the corner of Steele St and Pacific Ave, passed up by quick traffic and distracted eyes. Several critics claim this place to have a “bustling worker” and a quick turn out time. A local favorite, if you can find it! The hours of operation are very limited; but its made up by the fact that it is open from Monday to Sunday! (9:00AM – 2:00PM).

My Thai Food Truck – 728 4th Ave E, Olympia, WA 98506

Offering a variety of meals from the renowned place of Thailand! My Thai Food Truck has several dishes of chicken and curry! They also have some staples like the infamous “Pad Thai”. One reviewer claims that this is some of the “greatest Thai food” they have had in awhile. Definitely worth going down and checking out.

Things to note: My Thai Food Truck does not have any seating, but nearby there is a cider place that allows you to sit down (I believe with an order from them!)

Nineveh – 728 4th Ave E, Olympia, WA 98506 – Located near the Filling Station!

“Brining a taste of the ancient Near East to the Pacific Northwest.” Nineveh has a unique cuisine in its truck! Assyrian food is not common here in the PNW, but thanks to this truck we have a little spot to go and travel through taste. Reviewers rave about portions and flavors! Strong, bold flavors and good-sized portions for the price. This place might be a little tricky to find at first, but once you find this spot you will see the other trucks around and go on a wild adventure of food-galore! This place offers vegetarian meals and there is seating around the area, so it is possible to sit back, eat, and relax.

The Gyro Spot – 317 4th Ave E, Olympia, WA 98501

Vegan and vegetarian options are available here! Come and enjoy the taste of the Mediterranean right here in Olympia. The food described by critics is “flavorful”. meat-loaded, and “delicious”. This place has an indoor area and a tiny pick-up window. Located on 4th Ave, it is an easier place to find and it is popular with over 500 reviews on Google. This place also has gluten-sensitive items like salad. These aren’t ordinary salads, however, they are packed with lettuce and several other goodies.

Example of a Greek Salad and Gyro.

It’s always fun to get out there and try new things and see new spots. When you can’t travel, food is an amazing way to experience different cultures right in your own cities. Go seize the day and eat some good food!
